Until yesterday, I had thought that the fine line between stupid and
clever was drawn by Spinal Tap. Wrong. By 1933, Ogden Nash put into
verse a
REFLECTION ON INGENUITY
Here's a good rule of thumb:
Too clever is dumb.
Now, I'll bet Mr. Nash was preceded in turn by a number of anticipatory plagiarists. I'm going to keep an eye out for the idea as I read around. If there's sufficient interest in the question of who quoth it first, I'll open a contest for the earliest citation.
